How long were you gone again?\u201d<br>\u201cGreat! I was out of the country for about 3 months and took the opportunity to discover lots of things! I even put on some weight.\u201d<br>\u201cOh don&#8217;t worry, you&#8217;re still beautiful!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By reassuring our colleague that she&#8217;s beautiful, we&#8217;re implying that, to be beautiful, you have to be thin, and that by being (more) fat, she can&#8217;t be. The reaction to reassure our interlocutor is instinctive and probably done unconsciously, but it could have the opposite desired effect: invalidation, alienation and shame for our colleague. Let&#8217;s deconstruct this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">It&#8217;s not a bad word!<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The term \u201cfat\u201d is reclaimed by people who identify themselves in this way to challenge its predominantly negative use. Fat people choose to use the word like any other descriptor, with neutrality, because it&#8217;s who they are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fat\u201d is not a dirty word. Nor is it a shameful concept.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This term is simply a neutral descriptor. It does not indicate a person&#8217;s level of health or beauty, nor does it assign a value to a person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Let&#8217;s talk about grossophobia<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We&#8217;re constantly bombarded with messages about beauty ideals, often unrealistic and full of clich\u00e9s. For example: women should be slim and men muscular. These messages are conveyed on social media, in TV series, through Instagram filters, by magazines that will give us the magic recipe to have a \u201cswimsuit body\u201d or even how to keep our New Year&#8217;s resolutions and lose or keep off \u201cthose unwanted pounds\u201d. We&#8217;re constantly told that we should want to achieve these body types.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We associate weight loss with self-improvement, better health, moral superiority and self-worth. That&#8217;s grossophobia, and it&#8217;s really hard to get rid of. Even if we know that body weight is not an indicator of health, it can still be hard to ignore these messages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Overweight? Obese?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The terms \u201cobese\u201d and \u201coverweight\u201d are medical terms. Using them in a conversation between colleagues, in a non-medical context, stigmatizes and medicalizes the subject, whereas being a fat person is a normal and natural characteristic of human bodies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Wrapped? Round? Voluptuous?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>These terms, whether in French or English (such as curvy, fluffy, etc.) can be perceived as euphemisms. Instead of using an existing term that isn&#8217;t a dirty word, we use a bypass. This may reflect discomfort, where we avoid using the word \u201cfat\u201d because we&#8217;re afraid or ashamed of it. It also adds to the feeling that \u201cfat\u201d equals \u201cbad\u201d or \u201cwrong\u201d and that we don&#8217;t want to name it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, you may decide to use these terms, or you may know fat people who refer to themselves with these words. You have every right to do so. Far be it from us to be the language police! As always, our final recommendation is to ask your interlocutor how he or she prefers to be called. It&#8217;s so much simpler! Depending on your level of comfort with the person, you may also want to ask why he or she chooses this appellation, and lead him or her towards a reflection that might encourage him or her to choose the term \u201cfat\u201d and assume it without discomfort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">We ask what our colleague prefers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Don&#8217;t forget that, even if the word \u201cfat\u201d is used, it&#8217;s still often said as an insult by many people. As a result, some people may not feel comfortable applying it and, in this case, it&#8217;s best to borrow descriptors that are more acceptable to the person you&#8217;re referring to, such as \u201cplus-size person\u201d or \u201cplus-sized person\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8212;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Do you enjoy inclusive language conversations?
