The The City of Laval  is a municipality located in the province of Quebec and is the province's third largest city in terms of population, after Montreal and Quebec City. Laval is a dynamic city with a steadily growing population. It is home to a diverse population, including residents from a variety of ethnic, cultural and linguistic backgrounds. The diversity of its population is one of the aspects that makes Laval unique and culturally rich.

Challenge to solve

The City of Laval is moving towards greater DEI awareness within its ranks. With nearly 5,000 employees, the municipality wanted to offer support to its HR Business Partners (HRBP), a team of around 15 people. The latter are on the front line in helping managers navigate complex DEI-related situations, but the City of Laval noticed that it lacked the protocols and tools to respond effectively to these challenges.

Proposed solution

Two practical DEI workshops

  1. First workshop
  • Reminder of DEI basics
  • Establishing a common language on the theme
  • Tackling persistent myths
  • Note the nuances for a better grasp of the subject

2. Second workshop

  • Sharing concrete cases encountered in daily practice
  • Co-construction of realistic solutions
  • Real-life situations addressed
  • Discussion of potential microaggressions at work
  • Co-creation of practical tools (e.g. decision tree, questions to ask managers) to support HR business partners in their role

Between the two workshops :

Online questionnaire sent to participants.

Gather questions and real-life situations from the workplace to address in the second workshop.

Impact of DEI workshops

City of Laval’s HR Business Partners are now better equipped to :

Helping managers support their teams

Provide empathetic and caring support to managers

Helping managers make informed decisions

What the City of Laval thought of our collaboration

The workshops enabled us to bring our knowledge of DEI up to date, as well as raising awareness among some participants who had not been much in demand or who felt little involved.
We noted Chloé's professionalism and adaptability when faced with our less conventional request for intervention. Our reflections, based on situations close to our own reality, paid off. This marked the beginning of this type of activity with all our employees.
